From Influence to Identity: YoCalum on Becoming Himself in Music

Authenticity, discipline, and faith sit at the core of YoCalum’s musical journey. As an emerging artist, he has learned that growth is not only about sound or skill but also about identity and purpose. Through reflection on his experiences, YoCalum offers insight into the challenges he has faced, his creative process, and the principles that guided his work.  Reflecting on his journey, YoCalum shares, “A challenge that I’ve faced and overcome throughout my music journey was learning to be myself. "I was trying to be like other artists, but it just didn’t feel right.” This realization marked a turning point, allowing YoCalum to move forward with confidence and authenticity in his artistry.

When describing his creative routine, YoCalum states, “A typical day for me when I’m working on a new project starts with me getting up, reading the Bible for a little bit, and praying.” Faith plays a foundational role in my process. He continues, “After I finish everything I need to do, I pick a beat and freestyle for a bit until I catch a flow state.” Once inspiration strikes, “Once I find the right beat, I records, and that usually completes one song for the day. Then, I just keep going.”

YoCalum also emphasizes the importance of mindset and consistency when speaking to fellow musicians. Offering guidance, he shares, “A piece of advice I would give to another musician like myself is to keep God first, stay consistent and disciplined, and learn the business.” He reinforces this belief by stating, “If you believe in the vision and put in the work every day, the right doors will open.” YoCalum’s journey reflects a balance of faith, self-discovery, and dedication. By staying true to who he is and committing to the daily work, he continues to build not just music, but a meaningful and purpose-driven career.
