OneGreatBastard explains that the region’s music relies heavily on sampling and drill. “The music uses a lot of samples, and it’s drill-heavy,” he shares. At the same time, he points to another side of the local scene that is beginning to gain attention. “My music is definitely countering that culture, but there’s also an emerging rock scene,” he states. Rather than simply following the sounds surrounding him, OneGreatBastard uses them as a starting point for developing something different. His perspective reflects an awareness of the musical culture around him while also highlighting his desire to challenge its established direction. By drawing from different influences and incorporating his own approach, he continues working toward a sound that represents his individuality and perspective.

At the center of his mission is a desire to challenge the negative perception associated with the word and transform it into something empowering. “My main goal is to show the world that every bast*rd is a star,” he states. He believes the history surrounding the word is overwhelmingly negative and wants to use his platform to highlight a different perspective. “I believe the stigma around the word is so negative. I’m obligated to show the world the light in me and the light left in the world,” he shares. That message gives his name a deeper purpose within his music and identity. Rather than allowing a negative association to define how people interpret it, OneGreatBastard wants to demonstrate that something positive can exist within what society may traditionally view negatively. His goal is to encourage people to recognize the potential and value that can exist beyond a label. His willingness to challenge conventions also extends to the way he views the modern music industry. OneGreatBastard has strong opinions about the influence of streaming platforms and believes the industry could benefit from returning to more direct forms of artist-to-audience connection. “I would remove streaming platforms. Make people get back on the road and promote their music that way” he shares. For him, that perspective is ultimately about encouraging artists to engage with their audiences more directly. He believes getting back on the road and actively promoting music could create stronger connections between artists and listeners while placing greater emphasis on the work and the experience surrounding it. His views reflect the same willingness to challenge established norms that shapes his artistic identity.

He points to the changing economics of the industry as a major concern, particularly when it comes to how artists are compensated for their work. “We used to receive $10 an album, and now it’s pennies for hundreds of streams,” he states. His comments reflect his belief that the current financial structure does not adequately reward artists for the music they create. He is equally critical of performance opportunities that require artists to pay for access to a stage. OneGreatBastard believes pay-to-perform platforms create additional challenges for musicians trying to build their careers. “That and pay-to-perform platforms have to be annihilated. They’re poisoning the well,” he adds. His position reflects a broader concern about systems he believes can make it more difficult for emerging artists to gain meaningful opportunities.
