Topia’s Journey: From a Remote Island to Vermont’s Music Scene

Topia, an emerging artist with a distinct perspective, brings a refreshing voice shaped by both his cultural background and his current environment. His reflections provide insight into his creative process, personal motivations, and thoughts on the broader music industry.
Topia shares, “I’m from Kiribati, but I live in Burlington, VT. The city doesn’t really have a sound so no one makes the same music out here.
This serves as an advantage, allowing him to avoid feeling boxed in creatively. Topia's ability to experiment with different styles and sounds without the pressure of fitting into a specific lane fosters a strong sense of originality. This freedom not only encourages artistic exploration but also plays a significant role in shaping his evolving creative identity.

Driven by both ambition and a deep sense of responsibility, Topia shares, “My main goal in music is to retire my parents and have the freedom to live how I want. I want to live comfortably doing music while making sure my family is good.” His words reflect a strong sense of purpose, showing that his ambitions go beyond personal success and are deeply rooted in supporting his family. This perspective highlights the deeper motivation behind his work, where success is not only measured by recognition but also by the stability and opportunities he can create for those closest to him. In turn, this mindset continues to fuel his dedication, shaping both his artistic journey and long-term goals.

Highlighting his awareness of the industry’s challenges, Topia shares, “If I could change one thing in the music industry, I would change the pay structure to give more money to the smaller artists.” His perspective brings attention to the financial struggles faced by emerging artists and underscores the need for a more equitable system. This viewpoint reflects a broader concern for fairness, showing that his mindset extends beyond his own success to the well-being of others navigating the same path. It also aligns with a growing call for change within the industry, where many artists are advocating for more balanced opportunities and compensation.Topia’s insights present a well-rounded artist who values creativity, family, and fairness within the music space. His perspective not only defines his journey but also contributes to the ongoing conversation about meaningful change in the industry.
